Fernando Cano Busquets : Homage in Black and White

Recently, the Corporación Cultural Las Condes, with the support of the Colombian Embassy in Santiago, presented the exhibition ‘Country: Homage in Black and White’ by Colombian photographer Fernando Cano Busquets.

Winner of the National Prize of Photography 2017 awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia for this same series, ‘Country : Homage in Black and White’ presents a series of landscape photographs and portraits full of humanity, which reflect the photographer’s love for his land and its people: its traditions, its nature, its culture and roots.

‘Wax Palms’, 2008

Although the original showcase encompasses over 150 images shot between 1970 - 2017, the Corporación brought an itinerary exhibition of 20 images.

Even in spite of such a reduced display, it is possible to admire in them the fine photographic work of lights and shadows, the search for the precise framing, the exact instant, the sharp focus.

According to Busquets, this series is a homage to his country as well as to black and white photography, and comprises four different themes: the landscape, the inhabitants, their surroundings and traditions and, finally, a study of the hands that work and forge the country.

‘Threading’, 1997

The photographs, most of them digital, manage to capture in fine detail every nuance of the image, allowing us to enter into the particular world of each one, almost as if we were inside them.

The format of these photographs (65 x 40 cms approx.) is somewhat larger than the standard, and yet more akin to the natural human eye scope, which almost replicates the natural perception of each image.

‘Braid’, 1981

Despite the absence of colour, Busquets manages the gray levels masterfully, so that even in natural landscapes we don’t need them in order to appreciate their beauty and majesty in all their amplitude.

‘Mountains’, 2011

‘La Olla’, 2008

Busquets’ portraits of humble inhabitants are full of empathy and genuine interest, bestowing them dignity and approachability. His images do not judge - they only show without prejudices, allowing us to effortlessly assimilate ourselves into the environment, and to thus understand it better.

‘Family’, 2001

‘Antonia and her family’, 2017

The subtle musical selection which accompanied this exhibition - a subtle guitar solo -, accentuated even further the traditional character of the display, helping the visitor to focus on the serene contemplation of the images.

Philosopher by profession, Cano Busquets began to work in journalism in his teens, as photojournalist and column writer.

This work meant his start in photography, for which he’s received some of the most prestigious awards, such as the Simon Bolivar National Prize for Journalism (Colombia,1976), World Press Photo (Netherlands, 1978), Exhibit A (Australia, 2012); One Eyed Land (2015) as well as his participation at the Photography Venice Bienale , representing his country in1978.

An exhibition of great interest for both professional and amateur photographers, and anyone looking for inspiration in images charged with poetry and sensibility.
