Pink Floyd's Mortal Remains at the V&A
It’s been four years since the Victoria & Albert Museum presented the "David Bowie Is" Exhibition. Now, they appeal once more to the pop taste of the masses with the "Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains" exhibition.
However, if the Bowie exhibition was focused on the iconic singer and his many stage personas, this exhibition revolves around the evolving aesthetics of this British band through the years, and how the trends of design and technology - as well as the pop music market-, changed and influenced each other in the same period.
Pink Floyd emerged in the pop music world in 1968, a moment of great social upheaval and cultural change across the world.

The particular mood of this time is imprinted in the band’s music as well as in their visual approach, establishing a trend that would continue throughout their nearly 50-year career.
This exhibition takes us on a multimedia journey through the ages, in which we travel not only physically through a succession of interconnected galleries, but also through virtual time, as inspired by the sounds and the visuals displayed in each section.
Curated by V&A’s Victoria Broackes and Aubrey "Po" Powell - who, along Storm Thorgerson helped create some of the most iconic LP cover for the band, including "The Dark Side of the Moon"-, this exhibition showcases varied memorabilia, LP Covers, video clips, original musical instruments and reproductions of some of the band’s most iconic imagery, such as the flying pig, the wall, and the facing metal heads from "The Division Bell".
Many of the objects presented were donated by the band members for the exhibition, but others are part of the Museum’s permanent collection.
Curated by V&A’s Victoria Broackes and Aubrey "Po" Powell - who, along Storm Thorgerson helped create some of the most iconic LP cover for the band, including "The Dark Side of the Moon"-, this exhibition showcases varied memorabilia, LP Covers, video clips, original musical instruments and reproductions of some of the band’s most iconic imagery, such as the flying pig, the wall, and the facing metal heads from "The Division Bell".
Many of the objects presented were donated by the band members for the exhibition, but others are part of the Museum’s permanent collection.
The exhibition also counted with the advising of the actual designers, technicians, architects and engineers behind the band’s shows in order to provide in-depth information and guarantee the accuracy of the displays.
Imaginatively designed, each gallery presents a separate time slot, encapsulating the visitor in a time bubble of sorts.
Using light and sound to enhance the many visuals presented, the exhibition is a delight to the senses, whether you are a Pink Floyd fan or not.
The exhibition is efficient in presenting information in an entertaining and interactive manner, and succeeds in providing a clear insight on how popular taste, technology and society have changed and interacted actively throughout these five decades.
