Del Cóndor al Oso : 75 Años de Animación en Chile

 

Organizada por Fundación Chilemonos, "Del Cóndor al Oso" pretende ser una exhibición que recopila la historia de la animación en Chile, desde sus comienzos en 1942 con el estreno del primer film animado, "15 Mil Dibujos" (protagonizada por un cóndor) hasta "Historia de un Oso", ganadora del Oscar como mejor corto animado en el 2015.

Este tipo de exhibición representa por lo general una oportunidad única para mostrar al público material inédito, reseas históricas, bocetos originales, fotografías y tal vez una que otra muestra física (maquetas, celdas originales, etc.) de estas creaciones. Sin embargo, estas expectativas quedan muy lejos de ser cumplidas en esta exhibición.

La muestra ocupa dos niveles de la galería. En el nivel superior se exhibe una línea cronológica de la animación en Chile, con una imágen por cada animación representada, listando sólo la fecha, creador y título de cada una. La galería inferior presenta más gigantografias de íconos de la animación en Chile, y una pared con paneles de texto sobre algunos animadores ( Carlos González, Álvaro Arce, Vivienne Barry, Tomás Welss, Alejandro Rojas, Diluvio Productora) y sus creaciones. En los extremos de la sala, dos televisores con cuatro sillas cada uno presentan diversos programas y documentales sobre animación, sin ninguna descripción escrita acerca del material presentado o de la duración de cada pieza.

 

 

Aunque la información contenida en los paneles de texto ofrece algo de información histórica, su distribución y el brillo de las luces sobre su superficie plastificada hace difícil leerlos en su totalidad. De igual forma, existen muchos animadores, estudios y creaciones que no están representados en estos textos y de los cuales no se entrega ninguna información.

Cabe destacar que, justo antes de la rampa de acceso a la galeria inferior, se encuentra un elemento extráneo a la exhibición misma, un modelo 3D de zootropo presentado por el Museo Interactivo Mirador. De toda la exhibición, este es el elemento que más atrae la atención del público visitante, probablemente porque es el único que presenta algo de la acción y entretenimiento asociado con la palabra ‘animación’.

Aunque la pobreza de esta exhibición podria aducirse a una falta de recursos, lo cierto es que se debe más bien a una falta de imaginación para presentar el material recopilado. Algo que, viniendo de una organización destinada a la animación y el desarrollo de materiales creativos, es realmente una lástima.

From the Condor to the Bear: 75 Years of Animation in Chile

Organized by Chilemonos Foundation, "From the Condor to the Bear" intends to be an exhibition to compile the history of animation in Chile, from its start in 1942 with the premiere of the first Chilean animated film, "15 Thousand Drawings" (starring a condor), up to "Bear Story", winner of the Oscar for Best Animated Short in 2015.

This kind of exhibition usually presents a unique opportunity to show to the public never before seen material, historical news clips, original sketches, photographs and perhaps a few physical samples (models, original cells, etc.) of these creations. However, these expectations are far from fulfilled by this exhibition.

The show occupies two levels of the Visual Arts Gallery. The top level displays a chronology of animation in Chile, displaying one image per each animation represented, listing only the date of creation, creator and title of each. The lower level displays more gigantic prints of iconic animated characters in Chile, and a wall with text panels about a few selected animators ( Carlos González, Álvaro Arce, Vivienne Barry, Tomás Welss, Alejandro Rojas, Diluvio Productora) and their creations. At both ends of the hall, two TV sets, each with four chairs, show programs and documentaries on animation, without any written description anywhere about the material presented or the length of each piece.

Although the information contained on the text panels offer some historical information, their distribution and the shine of the lights over their plastified surface makes it hard to read them in full. At the same time, there are many animators, studios and productions which are not represented on these texts, and about which no information is given.

 
It’s interesting to note that, just before the ramp that connects both levels, there’s an extraneous element to the exhibition itself: a 3D zoetrope model presented by the Interactive Museum Mirador (MIM). Of the entire exhibition, this is the element that most captures the attention of the visiting public, probably because it’s the only one that presents some of the action and entertainment associated with the word ‘animation’.

Although the dullness of this show could be explained due to a lack of resources, the truth is that it is merely due to a lack of imagination in presenting the collected material. Something which, coming from an organization destined to animation and the development of creative material is truly a shame.
