Grandes Pintores en el Cine

Desde el 1ro de Marzo hasta el 20 de este mismo mes, la Cineteca Nacional presenta el ciclo de cine "Grandes Pintores", exhibiendo seis filmes sobre seis artistas tan diferentes en estilo como las películas que los retratan.

El ciclo comienza el 1ro de Marzo con "Basquiat" (1996) de Julian Schnabel, película que cuenta el meteórico ascenso de Jean-Michel Basquiat luego de ser descubierto como artista callejero por Andy Warhol en Nueva York, hasta su rápido deterioro y eventual muerte a principios de los aos 80. Con un casting excepcional conformado por Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, David Bowie y Benicio del Toro, este film es considerado como uno de los mejores retratos de este influyente artista en la escena del arte y las artes gráficas de Nueva York.

El ciclo continua con "Sobreviviendo a Picasso" (1996) de James Ivory, en el que se relata su relación con la joven artista Françoise Gillot, quien fue su admiradora y luego se convirtió en su modelo, musa y amante. Las excelentes actuaciones de Anthony Hopkins como Picasso y Natasha McElhone como Françoise Gillot, junto a una hermosa cinematografía, hacen de esta pelicula una obra imperdible tanto para cinéfilos como para los admiradores de Picasso.

"Shirley, Visiones de la Realidad" (2013) de Gustav Deustch, presenta una visión metafórica de la historia norteamericana de parte del siglo XX. Trece pinturas del afamado pintor norteamericano Edward Hopper (considerado como el gran pintor de la vida común norteamericana) cobran vida, relatando la historia de ‘Shirley’, una típica mujer norteamericana, sujeto de muchas de las obras de Hopper, y sus experiencias a través de los vaivenes de los aos 30 hasta principios de los 60. Incluso si la trama a veces puede ser confusa, la belleza visual de este film vale la pena una segunda mirada.

"Goya en Burdeos" (1999) de Carlos Saura, presenta los últimos dias del genial pintor Espaol cuando, exiliado voluntariamente en Francia y casi ciego, rememora su vida y sus relaciones con patrones y amigos, haciendo un viaje pictórico y onírico a través de su arte y la historia.

"Frida" (2002) de Julie Taymor, cuenta en coloridos trazos los momentos mas importantes de la vida de esta pintora mexicana, su particular visión del mundo y su relación con Diego Rivera. Las actuaciones de Alfred Molina y Salma Hayek en los roles principales, así como la cuidada dirección de arte y vestuario forman parte de un festín visual que no se puede dejar de ver.

El ciclo cierra con "Yo Le Disparé a Andy Warhol" (1996), de Mary Harrow, película independiente que cuenta la historia, basada en hechos reales, de Valerie Solanas, radicalista de los aos 60 y creadora del SCUM Manifesto contra los hombres. Esta escribió un guión cinematográfico y se lo propuso a Warhol para producirlo. Cuando éste rechazó el proyecto, Valerie le disparó, casi poniendo fin a sus días. La actuación de Lili Taylor como Valerie le valió amplios reconocimientos y lanzó su carrera actoral.

Great Painters on Cinema

From March 1^st to the 20^th, the National Cineteca Nacional is showing the film festival "Great Painters", showcasing six films about six artists as different in style as the films that portray them.

The festival starts with "Basquiat" (1996) by Julian Schnabel, a film which tells Jean-Michel Basquiat’s meteoric ascent after being discovered as a street painter by Andy Warhol in New York, to his quick decay and eventual death in the early 1980's. With an exceptional casting formed by Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, David Bowie and Benicio del Toro, this film is considered one of the best portraits of this influential artist in the arts and graphic arts scene of New York.

The festival continues with "Surviving Picasso" (1996) by James Ivory, which tells of his relationship with the young artist Françoise Gillot, who was his admirer and eventually became his model, muse and lover. The excellent performances by Anthony Hopkins as Picasso and Natasha McElhone as Françoise Gillot, along with its gorgeous cinematography, makes this film a must for cinema lovers and Picasso admirers alike.

"Shirley, Visions of Reality" (2013) by Gustav Deustch, presents a metaphoric vision of U.S. history of part of the XX century. Thirteen paintings from the famed American artist Edward Hopper (regarded as the great painter of the American life ) come to life, recounting the story of ‘Shirley’, a typical American woman, subject to many of Hopper’s paintings, and her experiences through the comings and goings of the 30's through the early 1960's. Even if the plot may sometimes be complicated, the visual beauty of this film is worth a second look.

"Goya in Bordeaux" (1999) by Carlos Saura, shows the last days of the genius Spanish painter when, voluntarily exiled in France and nearly blind, remembers his life and relationships with patrons and friends, in an oneiric, pictorial trip through history and his art.

"Frida" (2002) by Julie Taymor, recounts in colourful strokes the highlights in the life of this Mexican painter, her particular vision of the world and her relationship with Diego Rivera. The performances by Alfred Molina and Salma Hayek in the main roles, as well as the careful art and costume design are part of a visual feast that one simply can’t miss.

The festival wraps with "I Shot Andy Warhol" (1996), by Mary Harrow, indie film which tells the true story of Valerie Solanas, 60's radical and creator of the ‘SCUM Manifesto’ against men. She wrote a screenplay and proposed it to Warhol for him to produce. When he rejected the project, she shot him, nearly putting and end to his life. Lily Taylor’s acting as Valerie earned her much acclaim and launched her acting career.
