Orígenes de la Tipografía en Chile

El pasado Jueves 30 de Agosto estuvimos presentes en la presentación oficial del libro "Orígenes de la Tipografía en Chile - Impresos de la Colonia y la Independencia", la más reciente publicación de la Biblioteca Nacional, en el marco de sus 204 aos de creación.

Ante una Sala América repleta, en el evento estuvieron presentes Thomas Harris, jefe de la unidad de Ediciones de la Biblioteca Nacional, el editor Cristóbal Joannon, el investigador Claudio Aguilera y el autor, investigador y diseador gráfico Roberto Osses, quienes presentaron ésta nueva obra al público, dando cuenta del extenso trabajo realizado en su publicación, así como de su especial importancia dentro del área de la investigación.

Luego de las palabras de Claudio Aguilera y Thomas Harris, Roberto Osses se dirigió al público con un ameno relato improvisado acerca de tres historias - una de amor, una de sueos y una de muerte - que ejemplarizan las pasiones que abarca la tipografía. Pues la tipografía es un reflejo de nuestra vida, y una de las herramientas en la que ésta queda plasmada para la posteridad.

Este libro, el primero en la colección de Arte y Diseo de la Biblioteca, es la culminación de casi cuatro aos de investigación por parte de Roberto Osses y su grupo de colaboradores.

Con casi 200 páginas, y dividido en tres partes, éste libro realiza una disección minuciosa de los diversos factores que influyeron en la importación y adquisición de los primeros tipos gráficos a América, así como los eventos, a veces azarosos, que propulsaron la creación de las primeras imprentas, impresos y tipografías originales en Chile.

En un lenguaje fácil y accesible, lleno de citas y anécdotas, el autor narra las peripecias detrás de las primeras imprentas, y el desarrollo del material impreso en la Colonia, así como la importancia estratégica que éstas tuvieron en la lucha por la independencia.

El Estudio Morfológico de las Fuentes utilizadas durante la colonia será de mayor interés para los diseadores, pero también actúa como un recreo visual para aquellos no asociados a este rubro, y explica de manera clara y evidente la tesis expuesta en esta investigación.

De especial interés resulta la sección dedicada a las reconstrucciones, en la cual el autor apoya sus hallazgos al contrastar un documento original de la Colonia con otro, recreado por él mismo, con los tipos encontrados durante su investigación.

Adicionalmente, el libro incluye una sección completamente ilustrada acerca de los términos y conceptos básicos de tipografía, como guía de base para todos aquellos no familiarizados con el tema.

Como dato interesante, el libro fué compuesto enteramente en la familia tipográfíca "Biblioteca", que Roberto Osses ayudó a realizar especialmente para la Biblioteca Nacional, y que acaba de ser liberada para uso público el pasado 11 de Agosto.

Con su profusión de ejemplos visuales, atractiva encuadernación, lenguaje accesible y sólida investigación, "Orígenes de la Tipografía en Chile" es un libro completo sobre un tema apasionante que sin duda será de interés para historiadores, investigadores y profesionales del diseo por igual.

THE ORIGINS OF TYPOGRAPHY IN CHILE

Last August 30^th, we were present at the official presentation of the book "Origins of Typography in Chile: Prints from the Colony and Independence", the latest book published by the National Library, in the context of its 204^th anniversary.

Before a crowded Sala America, the event was hosted by Thomas Harris, head of the National Library Editorial Section, Editor Cristobal Joannon, researcher Claudio Aguilera, and the author, researcher and graphic designer Roberto Osses, all of whom presented this new work to the public, giving account of the extensive work done in its publication, as well as its special importance in the research field.

After the discourses by Claudio Aguilera and Thomas Harris, Roberto Osses addressed the public with an improvised humorous speech, about three stories - one about love, one about dreams and one about death - which provide examples of the passions encompassed by typography. For typography is a reflection of our life, and one of the tools by which it is engraved for posterity.

This book, the first in the Art and Design Collection by the National Library, is the culmination of nearly four years of research by Roberto Osses and his team of collaborators.

At nearly 200 pages and divided in three parts, this book makes a minute dissection of the diverse factors that influenced the import and acquisition of the first types to America, as well as the events, sometimes fortuitous, that propelled the creation of the first printing presses, printing material and original font types in Chile.

In a plain language easy to follow, full of quotes and anecdotes, the author tells of the vicissitudes behind the first prints, and the development of printed material in the Colony, as well as the strategic importance that these held in the struggles for independence.

The morphological study of the fonts used in the Colony will be of the most interest to designers, but also acts as a visual break to those not associated with this area, and explains in a clear and evident manner the thesis behind this research.

Of special interest is the section dedicated to reconstructions, in which the author supports his findings by contrasting an original document from Colonial times with another, recreated by him, using the fonts found in his research.

In addition, the book includes a thoroughly illustrated section on the basic concepts and terms of typography, as a field guide for all those not familiarized with the subject.

As an interesting fact, this book was entirely composed in the "Library" font family, which Roberto Osses helped to create specially for the National Library, and which was recently liberated for public use last August 11^th.

With its profusion visual examples, attractive binding, accessible language and solid research, "Origins of Typography in Chile" is a well-rounded book about an intriguing subject, sure to be of interest to historians, researchers and design professionals alike.
