Jim Henson - Magic Never Dies

If you’re a fan of Jim Henson’s work, this is the exhibition you’ve been waiting for.

After several years in the making, and showcasing many of the articles donated by the Henson family in 2013, the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria is finally opening a permanent exhibition dedicated to this master puppeteer and creator of some of the most recognizable and beloved characters in popular culture.

From Henson’s early 1950's experimental show "Sam and Friends", to his final films, "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal", the exhibition presents over 30 years of imaginative work, in which Henson and his collaborators pushed the boundaries of puppetry and puppet creation, experimenting with the media and new technologies to come up with the shows and films that became part of our collective memory.

Heralded by a travelling exhibition and organized in chronological segments, this retrospective presents a trove of never-before-seen material from the Henson Company’s archives.

Interspersed among 47 of its most famous puppets, the exhibit displays scripts showing notes and corrections by Henson and his collaborators, storyboards for the shows, intricate set models, sketches for the creation of the characters as well as production shoots. It provides a privileged view of the labourious process and the detailed work that went behind each of the series that became cult classics, helping the visitor to appreciate even more the quality of each of these creations. Henson was famous for being a staunch perfectionist, a fact that quickly comes to light seeing his many sketches and notes.

Perhaps one of the greatest thrills of the exhibition is to actually see your favourite Muppet character up close. Some may be disappointed by their humble materialness, but this fact only highlights even more the superb artistry and craftsmanship of the puppet artists behind them.

In addition to the real puppets used in the shows, the exhibition showcases the costumes from the ball scene from "Labyrinth", and a full-size Selkik from "The Dark Crystal". Also, being a museum specialized in film and television, the exhibition is rife with audiovisual material: from failed tests and TV commercials, to behind-the-scenes footage and full "Muppet Show" episodes.

Although children will certainly enjoy the exhibition, most of it is targeted towards adults, with only a few interactive experiences - such as give it a try to lip-sync while animating a puppet - perhaps too complex for young children.

The museum also presents a calendar of related events and screenings of Henson’s films such as "The Muppet Movie", "The Muppets Take Manhattan", "Labyrinth", and "The Dark Crystal", among others. For more information, check the museum’s website below.

Si eres un fan de la obra de Jim Henson, ésta es la exhibición que has estado esperando.

Después de varios aos de preparación, y mostrando muchos de los artículos donados por la familia Henson en el 2013, el Museo de la Imágen en Movimiento de Astoria finalmente abre una exhibición permanente dedicada a este maestro titiritero, creador de algunos de los personajes más amados y reconocibles de la cultura popular.

Desde un temprano show experimental de los aos 50 llamado "Sam y Sus Amigos", hasta sus últimas películas, "Laberinto" y "El Cristal Encantado", la exhibición presenta más de 30 aos de trabajo imaginativo, en los cuales Henson y sus colaboradores expandieron los límites del arte titiritero y de la creación de títeres, experimentado con los medios y las nuevas tecnologías para crear los programas y películas que ahora forman parte de nuestra memoria colectiva.

Precedido por una exhibición itinerante, y organizada en segmentos cronológicos, ésta retrospectiva presenta una amplia colección de material nunca antes visto de los archivos de la Compaía Jim Henson.

Intercalado a 47 de sus títeres más famosos, la exhibición muestra guiones mostrando correcciones y notas de Henson y sus colaboradores, storyboards para los shows, intrincadas maquetas de los sets de rodaje, sketches para la creación de los personajes, así como fotos de los entretelones de producción. Todo esto provee al espectador una visión privilegiada del laborioso proceso de creación, y del detallado trabajo realizado tras bambalinas de cada una de las series que se convirtieron en clásicos de culto, ayudando al visitante a apreciar aún más la calidad de cada una de ellas. Henson era famoso por ser un acérrimo perfeccionista, algo que sale a la luz al ver sus notas y bocetos.

Tal vez una de los puntos más emocionantes de la exhibición es ver a tu Muppet favorito en la vida real. Algunos se decepcionarán de su humilde materialidad, pero esto sólo destaca aún más la excelencia artística y la destreza de los artistas titriteros detrás de cada uno de ellos.

Además de los títeres reales utilizados en los shows, la exhibición presenta el vestuario original usado en la escena del baile de "Laberinto", y un Selkik de tamao real de la película "El Cristal Encantado". También, siendo un museo especializado en cine y televisión, la exhibición está repleta de material audiovisual: desde pruebas fallidas y comerciales para televisión, hasta grabaciones tras bambalinas y capítulos completos de "El Show de los Muppets".

Aunque los nios sin duda disfrutarán la exhibición, la mayor parte de ésta está dirigida a los adultos, con apenas unas cuantas experiencias interactivas - tales como probar darle voz a un títere y animarlo al mismo tiempo - tal vez demasiado complejas para nios pequeos.
